Lentil Strawberry Popsicles

 

For babies 6 months and up. High in iron and vitamin C, these popsicles are so easy to prep. So many parents ask me where I get these super practical small popsicle moulds. They’re so perfect because they’re made in silicone and they come out so easily (no need to run hot water over them). Ingredients

½ cup (125 ml) cooked green lentils (or unsalted canned green lentils, drained)

½ cup (125 ml) fresh strawberries

½ cup (125 ml) orange juice

 

Preparation

Cook the lentils. I usually cook 2 cups of dried green lentils in 6 cups of water for 20 minutes and store them in the freezer to use in recipes like this one. Be sure to use a large enough pot because the lentils expand when cooked! Place all ingredients in the blender and process until smooth. Pour into the popsicle moulds and freeze for at least an hour.

How to Serve Kiwi to Your Baby

Looking for a new fruit to serve your baby? Do you want your little one to experience something other than bananas and oranges while doing baby-led weaning? Why not give the kiwi a try! This fuzzy fruit is actually a berry, and pound for pound contains more vitamin C than oranges.

Ripe kiwi has the ideal texture for an infant just starting their real food journey. All that hairy skin comes in handy too. Not only is it edible, but it helps tiny hands get a good grip on an otherwise slippery fruit. Ki-Oui!

How to Prepare Kiwi for Your BLW Baby

You want to start by choosing a soft and ripe kiwi. If the fruit is underripe, the white middle section can be tough for babies who are just starting to eat on their own.

Next you want to give the skin a gentle scrub under cold water. It is important that the skin is clean since it will without a doubt go into your curious baby’s mouth.

Take a sharp knife and cut the kiwi into quarters with the skin on. Cut the end corners off each quarter to ensure none of the hard stem area is included.

Serve it just like that to your baby. If you find the middle section is still too tough, you can remove it before serving. If you don’t feel comfortable leaving the skin on and your baby does well without the skin, you can remove it. It’s just that the skin tends to help the kiwi slide less in their mouth. Your choice! Make sure you always supervise your baby when he or she is eating.

How to Serve Chicken Drumsticks to Your BLW Baby

What is full of protein, is a good source of easily absorbed iron, has a natural handle for baby and takes just minutes to prepare? Drumroll please…my favourite chicken drumstick recipe of course!

This recipe will not only drum up compliments from family and happy gurgles from your baby, but it is easily made BLW safe so that your little one can experience new textures and flavours without fear. So don’t be a chicken and follow these simple steps to get our BLW chicken drumsticks on your table tonight!

How to Prepare Chicken Drumsticks for Your BLW Baby

First, preheat your oven to 375˚F. Then line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place six fresh or safely defrosted chicken drumsticks on the lined sheet.

It is time to season! First, sprinkle ground black pepper onto each drumstick. You want to add a healthy pinch for each stick, about 1/6th of a tsp (or simply divide a full teaspoon of pepper between the drumsticks).  Next add garlic powder, using the same method and amount. Finally, again with the same instructions, sprinkle on some dried basil.

Once your oven is ready, bake the drumsticks for 30 minutes. When the timer rings, flip the drumsticks and bake for another 30 minutes.

Place an internal thermometer in the thickest part of the drumstick (being careful to not hit the bone) to ensure the chicken is cooked thoroughly to 165˚F and is safe to eat.

Now we want to make these drumsticks BLW appropriate! Once they have cooled, take off the skin. Next, remove the little pointy bone the sits beside the large bone.

Although chicken skin contains fat which babies need, it can be difficult to handle and should be removed. Feel free to sprinkle more seasoning after the skin is removed

There is no need to wait until your baby is 12 months to offer him/her fish. In fact, it’s a good idea to offer fish to babies from 6 to 12 months because it’s packed with good fats, iron and zinc. The problem with fish is that it usually doesn’t hold together very well. It’s dry and falls apart easily when babies handle it.

I created this recipe with fish that actually holds together. The trick? Cut up the fish into bite-sized pieces while it’s still semi-frozen BEFORE baking it.

To prepare the recipe, I cut the skinless salmon into squares. Then, I marinated the fish in a delicious mixture of oil, lemon juice, garlic powder, pepper, lime zest, ginger, coconut and cumin. Then, I baked them in the oven for 6 minutes.

 

These can be served as a fancy appetizer or as the main course along with some zesty roasted cauliflower. They’re 100% juicy and they actually hold together.

Thai Salmon Bites recipe

 

450g salmon, boneless, skinless

¼ cup (60 ml) olive oil

1 tbsp (15 ml) lemon or lime juice

1 tsp (5 ml) garlic powder

½ tsp (2.5 ml) pepper

1 tsp (5 ml) lemon or lime zest

1 tsp (5 ml) ground ginger

1 tbsp (15 ml) coconut, shredded, unsweetened

½ tsp (2.5 ml) cumin

 

 

Place salmon in the freezer for about 20 minutes until semi frozen. In a medium bowl, add the rest of the ingredients. Remove salmon from the freezer and cut salmon into 3 cm (1 inch) squares. Than, add the salmon to the bowl and cover on all sides. Let marinate for 30 minutes in the fridge. Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C) and place salmon bites onto a covered baking sheet. Finally, bake for 6 minutes or until fully cooked. Let cool and offer to your baby. Can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Cannot be frozen.

Now, back to the holiday cut-out cookies!  Here’s how I prepared the BLW cookies.

 

I added the almond flour, spices and dates to a food processor and pulsed until the dates were broken up. Then, I added the olive oil, vanilla and egg and pulsed until a soft dough formed. I placed the dough onto a piece of parchment paper:

Then, I rolled out the dough.

After that, I put the dough in the fridge for 30 minutes.  Then, I cut the dough into shapes using cookie cutters.

Finally, I baked the BLW holiday cut-out cookies in the oven at 300F for 10 minutes. There you go! Amazing BLW cookies with no sugar added, no refined ingredients and no dairy!

Holiday Cut-Out Cookies

 

Ingredients

 

2 3/4 cups almond flour

1 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp ginger

1/2 tsp nutmeg

1/2 tsp baking powder

4 soft Medjool dates, pitted

1/3 cup olive oil

1 tsp vanilla

1 egg

 

Preparation

 

Place the almond flour, spices, baking powder and dates into a food processor.  Then, pulse until combined.  After that, add the olive oil, vanilla and egg and pulse until a soft dough forms. Then, place the dough between 2 sheets of parchment paper and roll to about 3 mm thick. Put in the fridge for 30 minutes.  Then, preheat oven to 300F.  After that, remove the top layer of parchment paper and cut the dough into shapes using cookie cutters.  Finally, place the cookies onto baking sheet lined with parchment paper.  After that, shape dough scraps into a ball, flatten until 3 mm thick and continue to cut cookies until no dough remains.  At last, bake cookies for 10 minutes.  Allow to cool.

Liver Pate BLW recipe for babies

Have you ever made liver pate recipe?  So first you might be wondering why to offer liver pate to your baby.  It’s because babies need lots of iron. Since their iron needs are so high, it’s difficult for babies to consume enough iron every day (especially since some babies don’t eat large quantities of food).  With liver pate, babies get lots of concentrated nutrients per bite.

For this liver pate recipe, I used chicken liver. I recommend limiting your baby’s chicken liver consomption to twice per week to avoid too much vitamin A.  Here’s what I did:

I melted coconut oil in the pan and added apples and allspice:

Then I cooked the liver and thyme until the liver was no longer raw. I put everything in the blender and transferred the liver pate into small jars:

Babies can enjoy the liver pate directly from a spoon:

Eating live pate is a great way to make sure you baby is getting enough iron.  You can eat this liver pate on anything, really.  Here is some liver pate spread on a cracker:

Liver Pate Recipe

Ingredients

4 tablespoons coconut oil

1 apple, peeled and sliced

1/2 teaspoon allspice

2 cloves garlic, chopped

1 small shallot, chopped

1/2 lb liver, cut into cubes

1 tablespoon fresh thyme

 

Instructions

  • Place 2 tablespoons of coconut oil into a pan on medium heat. Add apple slices and allspice and cook until soft. Add garlic and shallot and cook for 3 minutes.
  • Add liver, thyme, and 2 more tablespoons of coconut oil to the pan. Cook until liver is pink inside and no longer raw.
  • Pour everything into a blender. Blend until smooth. Store in small jars.

Grilled Lamb Chops Recipe for Babies

This is the second blog post part of the “Half Lamb for Babies” series.  Basically, I bought a half lamb and every time I cook a portion, I make it appropriate to serve to babies six months or over (and the rest of the family for that matter!).  I started with minty lamb meatballs for babies made with ground lamb and today I’m sharing a scrumptious grilled lamb chops recipe.  Fancy yet simple.

First off, I thawed one package of lamb chops from La Ferme Valens:

I picked some fresh rosemary and thyme in fresh herbs pot:

After that, I combined all the ingredients except the lamb chops in a small bowl:

Then I rubbed the herb mixture on both sides of the lamb chops.  I placed the lamb chops in a container to marinate for one hour in the fridge:

Finally, I cooked them on the barbecue at the highest temperature.

The finished product! You can offer one small lamb chop to your baby to gnaw on.

Babies can gnaw on these lamb chops even when just starting out at around 6 months old. They won’t get much meat off but the sucking action will draw out the iron from the meat and this can keep them busy for a long time. Long enough for the rest of the family to enjoy a nice hot meal while the baby chomps on the baby led weaning (BLW) lamb chops.

Grilled Lamb Chop Recipe for Babies

 

INGREDIENTS

2 large garlic cloves, minced

1 tablespoon fresh rosemary leaves, chopped

1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves, chopped

Pinch cayenne pepper

1/2 teaspoon coarse sea salt (omit if you have a baby under 12 months)

2 tablespoons olive oil

4 lamb chops

 

Combine all ingredients except the lamb chops in a bowl. Rub the mixture on both sides of the lamb chops and let marinate for at least one hour in the refrigerator. Then, remove from refrigerator and allow the lamb chops to come to room temperature for about 20 minutes.

Then, heat barbecue over high heat, add the chops and sear for about 2 minutes. Flip the chops over and cook for another 3 1/2 minutes. Let cool to room temperature and offer one small lamb chop to your baby. Enjoy!

Makes approximately 4 adult-sized portions.

Minty Lamb Meatball Recipe for Babies

BLW minty lamb meatball recipe for babies… oh how divine this is!  For the first time ever, we decided to buy a half lamb to store in our freezer. This time we went with Ferme Valens in Huntington because they are at the Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue market and we see them all the time. My plan is to make all parts of the lamb baby led weaning (BLW)-friendly and blog about it. Today I’m starting with a simple meatball recipe perfect for babies’ hands.

 

Precautions

Before doing Baby-Led Weaning (BLW) with your baby, it is important to proceed safely by contacting a pediatric registered dietitian. Among other things, make sure that:

  • your baby is ready and does not start too early
  • your baby is sitting at 90 degrees
  • you do not place food in his/her mouth with your fingers
  • the environment is calm during meals
  • you offer the right foods to your baby (always test the texture of the food in between your tongue and roof of your mouth)
  • you watch your baby eat at all times
  • you contact a pediatric registered dietitian to make sure you are proceeding safely
  • you read the warning below

Warning*

BLW is contraindicated for babies at risk of dysphagia, such as babies who have an anatomic disorder (cleft palate, tongue tie), a neurological disorder (developmental delay, hypotonia, oral hypotonia) or a genetic disorder. Follow-up by a health professional (doctor, pediatric registered dietitian) is necessary for babies at risk of anemia such as babies born prematurely, babies with low birth weight (less than 3000 g), worries related to growth, babies born to an anemic mother, baby for whom cow’s milk was introduced early and/or a vegan baby.

I already had most ingredients in my kitchen so I didn’t have to make a special trip to the grocery store. I did however make a special trip to my sister’s to pick some of her mint that’s taking over her garden! Here we are picking the mint :

She gave us some amazing chimichurri as a BONUS!  It also tasted great with the meatballs.

This baby led weaning (BLW) recipe is very easy. You take the ground lamb:

Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and mix to combine in a stand mixer.

Then shape the mixture into 16 BLW-approved meatballs.  This recipe makes 16 baby led weaning iron-rich meatballs:

Then cook them on the barbecue for about 10 minutes. Easy!  Perfect for little baby hands! I served these baby led weaning (BLW) meatballs with a yogurt lemon dip, recipe below.

BLW Minty Lamb Meatball Recipe

INGREDIENTS

1 pound ground lamb

1/2 cup finely chopped white onion

1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh mint

2 tablespoon finely chopped fresh cilantro

1 garlic clove, finely chopped

1 teaspoon ground coriander

1/2 teaspoon ground cumin

1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

  • Heat the barbecue.
  • Combine all ingredients in a large bowl (I used my stand mixer) and mix to combine.
  • Form into 16 balls (about 2 teaspoons each) and place on skewers.
  • Cook on barbecue until meatballs are no longer pink in the middle, about 10 minutes.

        

Note: These BLW meatballs can also be made in the oven at 375F on the middle rack. Place individual baby led weaning meatballs on a baking sheet and cook for 15 minutes. Do not overcook them as the texture will be tougher.

 

Lemon Yogurt Dip

INGREDIENTS

1 cup whole-milk plain Greek or thick yogurt

¼ cup peeled cucumber, minced (optional)

1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh cilantro

2 teaspoons finely chopped fresh mint

1 teaspoon ground cumin

Zest of 1 medium lemon, grated

½ tsp freshly ground pepper

Combine all yogurt ingredients in a small bowl. Mix well.
